Get your VAT right, and get your refunds back sooner.

Building work has its own VAT rules, like the domestic reverse charge (DRC), where your customer pays the VAT to HMRC instead of you, and unlike typical accountants, we deal with these specifics every day. We file your returns on time and tell you what's due well before the deadline.

What's covered

What we do for your VAT

  • Registering you for VAT, if you need to be
  • Working out which of your jobs are reverse charge and which aren't
  • Checking your invoices say the right thing for each
  • Your VAT returns, sent through Making Tax Digital software, which every VAT return now has to be
  • Telling you what you owe, or what you're owed, before the deadline
  • Moving you to monthly returns if HMRC usually owes you money (to improve the cash flow of your business)
  • Answering HMRC if they query or investigate a return

Who needs this

Sound familiar?

You're not sure what DRC is or how to handle it

It depends on who the job's for and whether they're VAT-registered. Get it wrong and HMRC can ask for the VAT again, with a penalty on top.

HMRC owes you, and you're waiting

On reverse charge work you pay VAT on materials but don't charge it. On quarterly returns, that money sits with HMRC for months.

You find out the bill a week before it's due

Then you're moving money around to cover it, or paying late and getting charged for it.

You're close to £90,000

Go over £90,000 of turnover in any 12 months and you have to register. Register late and you owe the VAT you should have charged, and you pay it yourself.

The process

VAT questions

When do I have to register for VAT?

When your turnover goes over £90,000 in any 12 months in a row, or you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. You then have 30 days to register.

What's the domestic reverse charge?

It's a rule for building work done under CIS between two VAT-registered businesses. Instead of you charging VAT, your customer pays it straight to HMRC. It doesn't apply when you work for the end user, like a homeowner.

Should I register if I'm under £90,000?

Sometimes it's worth it. For example, if most of your work is reverse charge, registering can mean getting back the VAT on your materials. Ask us and we'll tell you if it makes sense for you. Advice calls are free.

Can I do monthly returns?

Yes, if HMRC usually owes you money. Monthly returns get refunds to you faster. We'll ask HMRC for you.

Know your VAT bill well before it's due.

Returns filed on time, reverse charge handled, and refunds claimed as quickly as the rules allow.
