Why subbies overpay
Does this sound like you?
These are some of the common problems construction businesses come to us to solve.
You don't know what you're owed
You've no idea if HMRC owes you £200 or £2,000, so you can't plan around it.
Your refund takes months to arrive
Your return goes in late, so the money sits with HMRC instead of in your bank.
Your refund's smaller than it should be
Costs you could claim, like mileage between sites, tools and workwear, get missed.
You're chasing contractors for statements
You need their CIS statements to claim, and they should have sent them already.

Know before you file
See your refund before your tax return goes in.
Pick your CIS rate and put in your income and expenses. The calculator works out the tax and National Insurance on your profit and takes it away from the CIS already taken off you.
Example: a joiner paid £31,200 with £4,000 of costs.
See what your costs are worth
Every £100 of costs you claim can put about £26 back.
At the basic rate, each £100 of costs cuts your tax and National Insurance by about £26. Try different costs in the calculator and see how the refund changes.

Get it claimed properly
Want the real figure? We'll claim it for you.
The calculator gives you a rough idea. We check your statements, claim every cost you're allowed and file your return as soon as the tax year ends, so the refund reaches you sooner. As construction industry specialists, we'll always look for ways to legally increase your refunds.

Who we are
We understand construction businesses because we ran one for 30 years
Before SiteLedger, we spent around 30 years running Flooring Guys, a commercial flooring company. No accounting firm had services, advice, support or contacts tailored specifically for the needs of any construction business, so we decided to do it ourselves.

"They completed tax returns for both myself and my wife. I expected to have a tax bill to pay. However, [they] secured an unexpected tax rebate. What a result. They're very easy to work with and efficient. Thank you, [SiteLedger]."

CIS refund questions
Is the calculator free?
Yes, and you don't need to give us any contact details. If you'd like our tax tips + business advice by email, you can leave your name and email at the end.
How accurate is it?
It's a rough guide. It uses the tax and National Insurance rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and assumes CIS work is your only income and that CIS came off all of it at the rate you pick. It also adds £462 for costs people often forget to claim, like using your home as an office and washing your workwear. Your real refund depends on things like other income, pension payments and student loans.
Who is it for?
Sole-trader subbies. If you're a limited company, CIS taken off your invoices comes off your company's PAYE bill each month instead.
When can I get my refund?
After the tax year ends on 5 April, through your tax return. The sooner the return goes in, the sooner the refund comes.
I've missed earlier years. Is that money gone?
Not always. You can often still claim for earlier years, going back up to four years. We'll check what you can get back.
Do you keep the figures I put in?
No. The calculator works in your browser, and your figures aren't sent to us.
