Your tax return done early, and your refund back sooner.

We start your Self-Assessment tax return as soon as the tax year ends on 5 April. If you've had CIS taken off, your refund comes back months earlier than a January return would get it. And you know what you owe long before it's due.

What's covered

What your tax return includes

  • Your tax return, filed with HMRC
  • Your accounts for the year: what came in, what went out, and your profit
  • Every expense you can claim, like your van, tools, workwear, mileage and phone
  • Your CIS deductions counted as tax you've already paid, so you get back what you've overpaid
  • What you owe and when, including payments on account (advance payments towards next year's bill)
  • Registering you with HMRC if you've just started

Who needs this

Sound familiar?

Your return's always done in January

So you find out what you owe with weeks to go, and any CIS refund sits with HMRC for months longer than it needs to.

You're not sure what you can claim

Every cost you miss means paying tax you didn't need to. Mileage between sites, the use of your home as an office for admin tasks, the laundry of your workwear, etc. add up over a year.

Payments on account come as a surprise

Your first big bill can include half of next year's tax as well. If nobody warned you, that's a January bill you didn't plan for.

You've just started and don't know where to begin

You have to register with HMRC by 5 October after your first tax year. Leave it too late and you can be fined.

Tax return questions

When's the deadline?

31 January, for the tax year that ended the April before. Any tax you owe is due the same day. We file well before then.

What are payments on account?

If your tax bill is over £1,000, HMRC asks you to pay towards next year's bill in advance: half on 31 January and half on 31 July. The money counts towards next year, so you don't pay it twice. It still surprises a lot of people in their first few years.

How do I get my CIS refund?

Through your tax return. HMRC counts the CIS taken off your pay as tax you've already paid. If that's more than you owe, you get the difference back. File early, get it early.

What can I claim?

Anything you spend only for your business: materials, tools, workwear, van costs or mileage, your phone, insurance and more.

Stop dreading January.

Your return filed early, every cost claimed, and your bill known months ahead.

"They completed tax returns for both myself and my wife. I expected to have a tax bill to pay. However, [they] secured an unexpected tax rebate. What a result. They're very easy to work with and efficient. Thank you, [SiteLedger]."
